A well rounded Arts education provides students with more than just a portfolio of products. The primary focus of an Art class should not be about weeding out the “artistic” to become career artists, but about every student embracing and enhancing their creativity. An Art class built on this philosophy gives each student the opportunity, not only to create things they are proud of, but more importantly gives them the tools necessary to be self aware, and to deeply understand. This understanding will not, by nature, be limited to the color wheel or the Elements and Principles of Design; but will spread, exponentially into their core learning subjects if creative thought is the focus of a student's Arts education. Therefore, my teaching is based on the process of making, or the “how to.” I provide students with an arts education that is focused on skill building, the development holistic, higher order thinking skills and self and social awareness. Through a “guided discovery” method of teaching, I assist students in leading their own classroom art dialogues and in making their own artistic decisions.
